FALLS CHURCH, VA - The Shortie Awards: International Film and News Festival seeks entries from youth and teacher film makers and news producers throughout the globe.
Now, in its 10th year, The Shortie Awards is a free-to-enter festival which recognizes original digital media production created by youth film makers, ages 7 to 18, and by K - 12 teachers.
The festival focuses on nurturing imagination and choice making in students and is one of the only competitions in the world to provide expert analysis and critique to each entrant.
The genre categories are:
- Live Action (narrative, experimental, music video, or other)
- Animation (stop-motion, claymation, machinima, digital, or other)
- Daily News Broadcast
The age categories are:
- 7 - 10 years old (2nd to 5th grade)
- 11 - 14 years old (6th - 8th grade)
- 15 - 18 years old (9th - 12th grade)
- K - 12 teachers
Filmmakers may submit their films individually, as a group, or as a whole class. Films may be no longer than 10 minutes in length and may be fact or fiction.

The festival date and location will be announced soon. MHz Networks will also host ShortieCon, a weekend-long series of workshops for educators interested in incorporating film making in the classroom and for students interested in film making. Please stay tuned for details.
With nearly 450 films created by nearly 3,000 student and teacher film makers from all over the world, the 2010 awards included entries from 20 states and 11 countries. Winners and finalists hailed from India, Hong Kong, and the UK as well as Minnesota, Utah, and Virginia.
